Something A Little Different......
THE SPIDER is noted for slam-bang action. In this adventure, the action is there, as always, but there's a real mystery to the plot as well. Very interesting to see how THE SPIDER works his way through the confined-aboard-a-ship plot device.

The War in Kosovo (New Perspectives (Austin, Tex.).)
Published in Library Binding by Raintree/Steck Vaughn (January, 2000)
Authors: Stewart Ross and R. G. Grant
Average review score:

The War in Kosovo by Stewart Ross
A balanced analysis of renewed Balkan conflicts that began and ended the twentieth century in war. Kosovo is a Muslim populated region in the former Yugoslav Republic that the Serbian Republic wished to dominate. To conquer the region, the Serbs initiated a genocide that they called "ethnic cleansing."

Presents the history of the war from the dissolution of the Yugoslav Republic through the rise of the Serbian state under the leadership of Milosevic. Juxtaposes accounts of NATO's efforts to bring peace to the region with press photographs of atrocites and interviews of refugees. Includes a chronology of important events, a glossary identifying people, places and political groups, index and sources for further information.

The Way It Was in the South: The Black Experience in Georgia
Published in Hardcover by Birch Lane Pr (December, 1993)
Authors: Donald L. Grant, Jonathan Grant, and L. Donald Grant
Average review score:

Every Georgian, whether Black or White should read this book
This is a very informative and interesting book that dispells a lot of incorrect information that I learned as a child in newly segregated Southwest Georgia. I remember watching shows like "Roots" and wondering why Georgia slaves here never tried to escape or revolt and after reading only 40% of this book, this misconception has been cleared. this book should be included in all the Georgia history programs.

Best thesaurus ever
This is the best thesaurus I have ever seen. It provides lots of synonyms for more common words, and provides cross-references for less common words. I use it in all my writings.

Well Said Text/Audio Tape Package: Pronunciation for Clear Communication
Published in Paperback by Heinle (01 September, 2000)
Author: Linda Grant
Average review score:

Great for use in tutoring or in the classroom
We use this book in our pronunciation/intonation ESL classes (for advanced adult speakers) because it covers all the essential areas of sound production: pronunciation, intonation, word stress, rhythm, and linking. The examples are very helpful and clear. The exercises are well written and relevant for adult speakers.

The supplemental materials are also great, especially for people working with a tutor. There is a speech profile to be completed by the student and reviewed by an instructor or tutor, which can help students focus on their strengths and weaknesses. There is also a good review of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) which is very useful for students who are not familiar with this transcription system. There are also sections which give an overview of the vowel and consonant sounds of American English. It also has good suggestions for independent learning, which are great to give students who have finished a class and are wondering what to do next.

The book can be used with or without the tapes. You do need to have access to a native speaker to make use of many of the exercises. This could be your teacher or tutor, or even just an American friend. I don't see this a weakness, because anyone studying English needs regular native speaker feedback , but it is something to be aware of if you are studying on your own.

Overall, one of the best pronunciation books available.

What School Secretaries Do When No One is Looking
Published in Paperback by Crystal Springs Books (01 May, 1998)
Authors: Irv Richardson and Jim Grant
Average review score:

The problem of finding a year end gift is solved!
This book is a hilarious look at what school secretaries (you know, the ones who really run the school) do. From doling out milk money to fixing boo-boos on the playground, school secretaries answer the phone, sort the mail, and everything in between!

A great gift idea for that special school secretary (especially at the elementary level) that really deserves it!

Where China Meets Southeast Asia: Social & Cultural Change in the Border Region
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (November, 2000)
Authors: Grant Evans, Christopher Hutton, and Khun Eng Kuah
Average review score:

Vital Book on a Vital Region
The border regions of China, Burma, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand are hotbeds of trade, migration, and smuggling. Opium and heroin, rubies and jade, endangered species, cars and women follow ancient trails across modern borders. The recent openning of borders has increased economic opportunity, but also spread drugs and AIDS. This book confronts these issues with a sophistication rarely found in similar collections. Most of the contributers are anthropologists with long research experience on the ground -- not economists who never leave the capital. There are many valuable chapters; to cite a few: David Feingold's witty exploration of the relationship of opium production to the trafficking of hill tribe girls, Andrew Walker's discussion of trading in Laos, Jean Berle on the role of Chinese Moslem traders, a Chinese biologists analysis of 'ecology without borders' and the animal trade, and Evans' useful introduction. This book is essential for both scholars and development experts (who may need a re-think), and will be re-read for its theoretical insights long after the particularities become dated. It also places current issues in historical context. A paperback would be welcome.
